Having noticed in many of the venues I am able to preach, that their expectations are growing shorter and shorter for sermon time limits. I am interested what most people are doing. I also am curious as to how you figured out that amount of time, your reasoning, does it vary, etc. Was it simply your experience in effectiveness or wise counsel from others? Is there some golden rule? Thanks

| Most of the time 25 to 30 minutes. However, I do preach some shorter sermons. |

35 to 40 minutes.
The folks here were used to much longer under the "previous administration", so they actually appreciate my shorter sermons.
I preach primarily expository messages, and use the amount of time necessary to handle the text.

| I generally preach 30-40 minutes and occassionally longer if needed to adequately handle the text. I sometimes preach expository sermons and sometimes topical. I get a hard time from some folks in the congregation about the length and then I have others that make a point to tell me "You know you kept my attention very well and I didn't even notice it was that long." |

Welcome to the board, Mark. My family and I lived in London for 7 years. Do you serve at Community Christian?

I can't figure this out. Brethren will spend an unlimited amount of time looking for a preacher. Once he is there they don't really want him to preach. At least not long.....Go figure??? |

Forever!! Everything I do is being a sermon in shoes.
Oh ..you mean when I preach ...but that is all times. Oh when I talk at church. I do that all the time too because I'm the church.
Oh, you mean when at the building people call "church" oh I preach 5 minutes and then discussion happens for 30 minutes. I give an illustration (personal) and the scripture ... and we break into small groups to discuss 5 - 10 questions. |
Isn't it strange that parents spend the first three years of a child's life teaching him or her to walk and talk, and throughout the rest of his or her childhood, they tell the kid to sit down and be quiet? |

And then there is that sermon, which only took me 30 seconds to read (I'm a slow reader). Discussion anyone. |
